HOW DO I CHANGE MY PASSWORD?

Passwords are an important aspect of computer security  and are your electronic key to the network of Stellenbosch University. For security reasons it is necessary for users to renew their passwords every 90 days and reregister their usernames before or on 31 st of March annually.

The best way to change your passwords is through the Stellenbosch University - User Adminstration System. Just follow a few simple steps to select your new password.

If you forgot your password, you can also change it by browsing to Stellenbosch University - User Adminstration System and selecting Forgot Password. However to do this, you have to supply your US and ID number, as well as the correct answer to your Password reset self-help questions. These questions can be changed at any time.

PASSWORD REQUIREMENTS

  • You cannot re-use your previous 10 passwords.
  • Your username, name or last name may not form part of the password.
  • The password must consist of 8 or more characters, but no longer than 32 alpha numeric characters.
  • Password must contain at least 3 out of the following 4 groups of characters: Alphabetic (Small caps), Alphabetic (Captital), numeric, special characters, (e.g.  %,$,#)
  • New passwords van contain spaces, but not at the end of the password.

TIPS FOR CHANGING YOUR PASSWORD

  • Make sure that your inetkey is closed, before changing your password
  • Rather connect to the network via a network cable, instead of doing the password change when connected to the network through the wireless connection.
  • If you are using a computer at home only, the change of your network password will have an effect on your e-mail logon password only, but the original computer login password will stay the same as before.
  • For all passwords, including the login password of the machine, to synchronize properly, the computer must be joined to one of the US domains.
  • If you have more than 1 device, please remember to switch off all your devices before you change your password on HTTP://WWW.SUN.AC.ZA/USERADM,  except the 1 device where you change your password on.
  • After changing your password on the 1 device, restart the device / logoff from the network.
  • Test the new password by logging on to the network.
  • After a successful logon, change all stored passwords on the first device (if applicable). Then you may switch on the other devices one by one and change your stored passwords on those devices as well.
  • The above procedure will assist you in assuring that the new password is set on each of your devices.
